This website privacy statement sets out how information is collected, used and disclosed through tafe.wa.edu.au. The website is owned and maintained by the Western Australian Department of Training and Workforce Development (the Department).
This privacy statement does not apply to external websites that may be linked on the tafe.wa.edu.au website. The Department is not responsible for the content and/or the privacy practices of other websites and encourages you to examine each site's privacy policy and make your own decisions regarding its accuracy, reliability and the correctness of material and information found.
Personal information
The use of the term "personal information" in this privacy statement means any information from which your identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained (for example your name or contact details).
You can visit this website without revealing personal information, unless you choose to provide it; for example, if you use an online form to make an enquiry and opt to provide your contact details so that we can respond. The information collected by the Department is dependent upon the actions undertaken when visiting the website.
If personal information is provided, for example when you complete an online enquiry form via the website, it will be used only for the purpose for which you have provided it and will not be added to a mailing list, unless explicitly stated. It will not be disclosed to any third party, without your consent. If you are asked for any other personal information, you will be informed how it will be used if you choose to give it.
Your personal information will at all times be dealt with in accordance with the applicable legislation in Western Australia and consistent with any legal obligation including the State Records Act 2000 and the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (PRIS Act).
Website visit data
When you view the website, the Department records some technical information about the visit. Each visit logs the following information for statistical purposes:
- the user's IP server address;
- the type of hardware (eg; PC, smartphone etc) and the browser used to access the site;
- the date and time the user accessed the site;
- the pages accessed, links selected and files downloaded, and time spent on the site; and
- the referring website.
This information assists the Department to understand how the website is used and helps to keep improving information quality. It does not include any personally identifiable information. The Department will make no attempt to identify you or your browsing activities, except where required by law.
How information is collected
Cookies on tafe.wa.edu.au
When you visit the TAFE WA website, some information is collected about how you interact with the website (e.g. when you visited, where you go on the site or whether you download any materials). We use 'cookies' to collect this type of information. A cookie is a small block of data that is shared between a web server and your computer's browser.
You can disable cookies using your web browser. If you opt-out of using cookies, some of the features on this website may not function fully and your ability to browse, read and download information may be impaired.
Third Party user tools
We use online tools to gather information about visitors to our website and to help us improve our website, advertising campaigns and deliver government services. A list of these tools and links to their own privacy policies can be found below.
Only anonymous information is collected by these tools. No identifiable personal information is collected unless you voluntarily provide it.

Via Analytics
We use the information collected about how you use the TAFE WA website and how the website performs during your visit for statistical and system administration purposes. We do this to help:
- monitor and understand usage trends to make sure the TAFE WA website continues to meet your needs and provide the information and services you are looking for;
- understand and enhance your experience of the TAFE WA website (for example, to improve content or make performance improvements);
- may also be used by us or provided to others as a summary report for marketing, advertising or research purposes; and
- monitor and protect the TAFE WA website from cyber security threats.
We do not use this information to identify you or match it with any other personal information we collect from you.
Via Tag management systems
We use the advertising platform tags or web pixels to alert the platforms that a ‘conversion’ is completed on the website (for example Meta Business tools and pixel. A conversion is a record of a type of action that you have taken on the TAFE WA website. We use this information to:
- deliver relevant website content to you and measure or understand the effectiveness of the advertising we serve to you;
- use data analytics to improve and enhance our existing products, services and applications and develop new offerings, recommendations, advertisements and other communications; and
- make suggestions and recommendations to you about services that may be of interest to you, including carrying out surveys to better understand your preferences.
We do not use this information to identify you or match it with any other personal information we collect from you.
Direct marketing
We will not use or disclose your Information for the purpose of direct marketing, unless:
- we collect Information and have obtained your consent to the use or disclosure of the Information for that purpose (except where it was impracticable to do so), including by your use of our website and the consent management platform, through which you chose to opt-in to the collection and use of cookies;
- you would reasonably expect to use or disclose the Information for that purpose;
- we provide you with an easy to use means of opting out of receiving any further direct marketing communications; and
- you have not requested that we cease sending you direct marketing communications.
We make use of a number of Google Analytics Advertising Features, including remarketing. The Remarketing feature allows TAFE WA to reach people who have previously visited its website and to match users with appropriate advertising.

We will only make use of your Sensitive Personal Information for direct marketing purposes if you have consented to the use or disclosure of that information for that purpose.
If you receive direct marketing communications from TAFE WA or from an associated entity, partner or affiliate, you are entitled to:
- request that you receive no further direct marketing communications from TAFE WA and/or the associated entity, partner or affiliate; and
- request that TAFE WA disclose the source of the information.
Opting-out
We will assist with any request by you to opt-out of receiving direct marketing communications. This may be a request to opt-out of receiving certain communications or to opt-out altogether.
We will not charge you for carrying out your request to opt-out. We will take reasonable steps to action your request (within five business days) and will respond your request regarding the source of the information within a reasonable timeframe, unless it is not reasonable or practical for us to do so.
When visiting our websites, you may reject all (or some) cookies (except for strictly necessary cookies) by using the consent management platform. The consent management platform also allows you to request that your cookie data be destroyed or removed from processing and we will take steps to facilitate such a request, to the extent that it is possible.
Use and disclosure

The personal information you provide us through the TAFE WA website will be used for the primary purpose for which it was collected. For example:

The Department will take reasonable steps to respond to a request for access within a reasonable period of time (within 45 days) and to give access to your Information in the manner requested, if it is reasonable and practicable to do so.
Time commences on the day after a valid application is lodged with the Department. Generally, an application is lodged on the date that it is received, whether it arrives by post, email or by hand. The date shown by a “date received” stamp would indicate that the permitted time starts the following day.
There will be times when it is necessary for the Department to “stop the clock”. For example, when an applicant is given an estimate of charges the clock stops on the day on which the notice of the estimate is given, and it restarts the day after the Department has been notified that the applicant wishes to proceed with the application.
The Department reserves the right to charge you a minimal fee for providing you with your Information if it forms the view that your request is unfounded or excessive.
If the Department refuses to give you access to your information, following your request, you will be given written notice which sets out the reasons for the refusal (except to the extent that it would be unreasonable to do so) and the mechanisms available to you to complain about the refusal.
Retaining and deleting your Information
This section sets out our data retention policies and procedure, which are designed to help ensure that we comply with our legal obligations in relation to the retention and deletion of your Information.
Information that we process for any purpose shall not be kept for longer than is necessary for that purpose.
In some cases, it is not possible for us to specify in advance the periods for which your Information will be retained. In such cases, we will determine the period of retention by taking into consideration the period necessary for retention for its lawful purpose.
Notwithstanding the other provisions of this section, we may retain your Information where such retention is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject, or in order to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of another natural person. Under the State Records Act 2000, the Department may be legally required to retain certain personal information beyond its original purpose, in accordance with approved Retention and Disposal Authorities that ensure records are preserved for minimum periods or permanently archived where appropriate.
In alignment with the PRIS Act Information Privacy Principle (IPP) 4.2, the Department must take reasonable steps to destroy or permanently de-identify personal information if it is no longer needed for any purpose for which it may be used or disclosed under the Schedule, unless the Department is expressly required or authorised to retain the information by or under another law.
Notifiable data breaches
Where we become aware of a potential data breach which is likely to result in serious harm to any individuals about whom we hold information, we will:
- investigate the suspected breach and determine the scope of any breach that has occurred and the risk of harm to affected individuals whose information may have been compromised;
- notify you of the potential breach;
- take steps to minimise any harm caused to affected individuals as a result of the breach; and
- notify the Privacy and Data commissioner.
How can I complain about a breach or give feedback on how the Department deals with my Information?
Should you wish to provide the Department with feedback with respect to its management of your Information, to complain about a breach of the Department’s privacy obligations or to appeal a decision with respect to a request for access to or the correction of Information. Please contact us. Alternatively, you can lodge a complaint to the Privacy or Data commissioner.
The Department will take reasonable steps to respond to your complaint and/or feedback within 45 days.
In the event that you wish to have a decision refusing access to your Information and/or refusing to correct your personal information reviewed or to lodge a complaint with respect to the management of your personal information, please contact us.
Disclosure of Information to overseas recipients
Generally, the Department does not disclose the Information of its customers to overseas recipients.
However, there is a possibility that, on occasion, your Information may be disclosed to an overseas recipient. The location of any recipients will vary depending on the project or purpose concerned.
In the event that a particular project or development will or may involve the disclosure of Information to an overseas recipient, the Department will take reasonable steps to inform you of that potential use or disclosure as soon as possible. As part of our notification process, the Department will inform you of the location and/or identity of that recipient.
Similarly with other third party recipients and/or partners of the Department, we will take reasonable steps to ensure that any overseas recipients comply with the Australian privacy legislation.

Definitions and specialised terms
This Privacy Statement uses the following definitions:
- An entity "collects" personal information only "if the entity collects the personal information for inclusion in a record or generally available publication".
- that use cookies, embedded videos, and other tracking technologies.
- Direct marketing involves the use and/or disclosure of personal information to communicate directly with an individual to promote goods and services. A direct marketer may communicate with an individual through a variety of channels, including telephone, SMS, postal mail, e-mail and online advertising.
- An entity “discloses” personal information “when it permits that information to become known outside the entity and releases it from its effective control”.
- FOI Act means Freedom of Information Act 1992 (WA).
- An entity “holds” personal information “if the entity has possession or control of a record that contains personal information”.
- your “Information” means Personal Information and Sensitive Personal Information as defined in the PRIS Act.
- Information Privacy Principles, as outlined in the PRIS Act, outlines 11 Information Privacy Principles (IPPs) in Schedule 1.
- Personal information has the meaning given in the PRIS Act.
- "Primary purpose" refers to the particular purpose for which the information in question was collected.
- PRIS Act means Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (WA).
- "Secondary purpose" is any purpose other than the primary purpose for which we have collected your personal information.
- "Sensitive Personal Information" has the meaning given in the PRIS Act.
- State Records Act means the State Records Act 2000 (WA).
Other use and disclosure
We will only use or disclose your personal information:
- for a purpose related to that for which it was collected if you have consented to that use or disclosure, or if you would reasonably expect the personal information would be used for that related purpose;
- where required or permitted by a law of Western Australia (e.g., under the Freedom of Information Act 1992); or
- if legally required to do so (e.g., by a court or tribunal order, or a law of the Commonwealth).
Any information we receive will at all times be dealt with in accordance with the applicable legislation in Western Australia and consistent with any legal obligation (including the State Records Act 2000).
Access to your Information
The Department will endeavour to ensure that the personal information it collects, uses or discloses is accurate, complete and up to date.
The Freedom of Information Act 1992 (WA) provides individuals the right to access certain documents held by the Department and to apply for amendment of their personal information if the information held by the Department is inaccurate, incomplete, out-of-date or misleading.
No fee is payable for access to personal information about you. However, should the requested documents or information contain non-personal information, you are required to pay an application fee of $30.
